12.004 ACRKS BALLOTED. New Plymouth was invaded by an army of land-seekers yesterday, running into three figures. The attraction was a ballot held by'the Land Board for 27 sections in the Whatitokarua block, of 12,094 acres, which is situated between the Ohnra and Ongarue. rivers. In all, 275 applicants went to the ballot. The block contains many good sec Lions. and a greater number of applications would have been received, but for the fact that all applicants had to be personally examined, either at New Plymouth or Taumarunui. The Land Board took this step in order to ensure to the greatest possible extent that only bona fide intending settlers went to the ballot. Owing to the large number of applicants, the ballot was held in the Courthouse. No applications were received for section (!, block 11, Tangitu, and section 7, block 4. Ohura, and they were accordingly submitted to a subsequent ballot, which was held at the Land Board office. .The sections were drawn as follows:—Slc 1, blk 1, Rangi, 5(15 acres, W. L. The land adjoins the best part of the celebrated Matamata estate, lies in. the middle of the Waikato dairying district, and is beinjr cut into thirty-one sections of 100 to 150 acres, all of which are level, being largely first-class swamp, and easily draina'ble. There is a good fall from the land, which will grow grass equal to the best Taranaki lands. The Waharoa estate would have been developed earlier, but for the fact that till recently it was in the hands of natives. Arrangements are in course of being made with the local Drainage Board for the draining of the area. Further particulars appear in the advertisement.
