A Canadian writer states that lie has proved that it is possible to destroy a Held of Canadian thistle by planting 'the ■field with lucerne. The' thistles "wereturned under and the lucerne then sowu, the produce being a glorious field of lucerne, which yielded £8 per aero offi the first cutting of hay for the season. The importance of humus in preventing the drying-ont 'of the soils cannot be too strongly impressed. Note that in sand little water remains after three' days' exposure, while in the muck and sand mix«d there remains twenty parts out of sixty-five. This indicates that where the hivmus is present in our clay loams they will withstand drought. Commercial fertilisers will supply the plant food, but they do not directly supply humus. They may be used to aid in this matter if they are applied to crops to be ploughed under; fertilisers should therefore be used with farmyard manure, not to replace it.
