It was generally feared by importer* throughout the, Dominion that as a result of the troubles in Turkey and Tripoli, shipping in the Mediterranean would he affected, and consequently the fruit market of the world, chiefly in regard to dates, currants and sultanas, would suffer, but so far these fears have fortunately not been realised. A northern exchange states that dates have become scarcer during the last few years, but a southern merchant remarks that although this fruit was unusually scarce last year, it was not due to the troubles in Turkey, but solely to the bad crop condition. Tn a number of cases consignments had to be condemned before being taken on board in Persia, where the fruit is grown. The next consignment would arrive in the Dominion early in November, and the prices quoted at present were normal. With regard to sultanas, he went on to say that during recent years California >had been coming . into prominence, and as the suplies from this source were increasing each succeeding year, merchants 1 would not have to depend on Smyrna as had previously been the case. Mildura, famous for its oranges, and which for some time was only able to produce sufficient' supplies of sultanas to meet internal demands, is .ooming into prominence, and last a' little for- export. Questionin regard to the quality, he stated Vfiat fit' was superior to the Smyrnagrown product.
