To the Editor. Sir,—l note Mr Mecklenburg Schwerin's reply to mine of the 14th, through your issue of to-day, the purport of which I fail to understand. Do I take his meaning to be that his dear father had quite enough of Herman conscription and tyranny so he tied for protection to the Union Jack, and is this what he advocates for this country: Conscription, mildly placed, to be later followed by something after the Gorman rule? Many a bright sovereign I have earned by exporting our dear old worn-out horses from England to feed the conscript Germans, and many more I hope to earn when I get me back Home to the Land of the Free. At heart I sympathise with the Germans under their autocratic rule, and, as suggested, my trying a twelve months' sojourn in his country; this I am not likely to undertake, as conscription and tyranny stink in my nostrils, as they do in all democratic Germans. Again, re my appreciating this good land. Doubtless Air Schwerin has not .seen a better. Funny thing so many turn their backs on it who have seen, other countries: vide immigration and emigration statistics. And as regards a man's manliness, what is grander than to stand firm for one's conscience and liberty, even to death if required. I am, etc.,— J. SELLAR. Patca, September 17.
