(a) thai a university professor is a man whose value to the community should consist in his personality, his individuality of outlook, and his originality of thought, but that, such qualities would cliielly serve to make life a. burden to men whom we call 'professors' in New Zealand (so that there is the consolation for someone in the thought that the conditions have minimised the danger of men with those qualities being imported): (b) so far from the work being done, for which tin: university existed, the great majority of the students left the colleges'less sound in body, and mind and soul, than on the day they entered, except for the salutary influence of tle'ir personal contact with one another, this council aiipoinis a commit lee to investigate such charges and report to the council thereon."
