MAGISTRATE'S COURT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Judgment by default was given in the case of W. Lonergan v. E. A. H. Stevens, claim £5 17s, costs 23s Gd. In the case, of the Mokau Harbor Board v. W. E. Dive, Mr. Johnstone applied for an adjournment, owing to the fact that he had been unable to get in communication with his client, who resided up the Mokau river. Mr. Roy (for the Board) said the case was one of failing to pay river dues, and he thought defendant was trifling with the Court, as he was on the telephone and the Board had had previous similar difficulties. The S.M. decided to adjourn the case to New Plymouth.
W. J. M. Thomas was charged, on the information of the police, with being on licensed premises .after closing hours; Constable Lapouplc gave evidence, that < he saw defendant at the door of a whare used by the porter as a bedroom, on a part of the Club Hotel premises, after 10 ' o'clock. .E. Jury, manager of the licensed house, said that it was part o/ the property. Defendant pleaded that it was not a portion of the actual licensed premises, although owned by the li- ! censee. Constable Lapouple quoted the I Licensing Act. and a ruling of Justice Edwards that any premises whatever apI pertaining to licensed premises formed a jportion thereof. His Worship said he I would view the place, and after having \ done so fined defcudant 10s and costs 7s. In giving judgment, the S.M. said that there was a ver\- wide interpretation of the Licensing Act in regard to "licensed premises." For failing to attend the camp at Waverley, James Jones was fined £1 and costs 9s.
