THE EGMONT SEAT.
The Eltham Argus, quoting from our issue of yesterday, unconsciously misses our meaning by isolating a paragraph from its context. It quotes us as saying: "The Government is, therefore, to be commended for putting Mr. Wilkinson forward instead of Mr. Dive, who had his chance and failed badly." "This," says the Argus, "is hardly fair. Mr. Dive put u.p a good fight against the strongest man that could be found to contest the seat against him. There is not a man in the Egmont electorate who would .have polled better than Mr. Dive at the general election." We did not reflect in any sense upon the fight Mr. Dive put up against Mr. Mackenzie. In saying that Mr. Dive iliad "bad his chance and failed badly." we were simply, referring to his political career when he represented Egmont in the House of Representatives.
