CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. Before Mr. V. G. Day, S:M. t Captain Vint, of the s.s. Aparima, was "charged with cruelty to animals in allowing three monkeys to be crowded into three email boxes and be underfed. The charge was laid against a member of the cooiie crew, who brought them from India for sale, and the captain was held responsible, as a freight of 5s each was .paid. • He was convicted and ordered to pay costs. Counsel for the S.P.C.A. said that the ■ case was also a breach of the quarantine law. FALSE PRETENCES. Timaru, Last Night. J. McCloud, said to be a recent arrival from Home, has been committed for trial on false pretences in selling stocks of a valueless "fire extinguishing powder" to four business people, adding "Sole agency" in 'two cases. He altogether obtained about £4O. BOTANY LECTURES. Timaru, Saturday. Dr. Cockayne, F.R.S,, to-day concluded the winter lectures to teachers on the botany series. They have been very well-' attended, and are "said to be verv. helpful m stimulating a spirit of observation and love of nature. COMMISSIONER RICHARDS. Timaru, Saturday. Commissioner Richards was warmly welcomed by the Army on arrival today. He was formally welcomed by the Mayor at the fortress this evening. '
