BOXING.
TOMMY BURNS. HOW THINGS ARE SHAPING WITH HIM. | I (Sydney Referee). ( Tommy Burns pens a long letter, writ-' ten at Calgary. Canada, on July 20. "I am training every day, and looking af- j tcr the store, so you see I don't have j much time to run around. I weigh 1881b i to-day, and I have nearly two weeks yet ] —August 8 we fight. (He refers to the Riekards match). It comes oil' in Saskatoon (Sask.) lam getting 5000dol for my end, win or lose, with this fellow. I would have made Mr. Mcintosh a proposition had I been able to come at the time for the date in August suggested by him, And we might have come to terms. "1 will see how I feel after this contest whether I -will continue or not at the boxing game. 'T am feeling fairly good, and am boxing every day, and am working strong. . "The police sent out a notice the other! day saving that if it looked like a prize' fight tiiey would arrant boxers and promotors, etc., hut I think it was only a stall to shut the 'wowsers' up, as they were hollering their heads off. This being so, I may not try to knock this fellow out. It's all up to the police. It's whatever they eay. I think Langford hadj that same experience in Winnipeg a boxer named Tony Caponi. Anyway, I am after my SOOOdol. They have posted lOOOdol already. The other 4000dol; is to be up the Monday before the battle, that's four days prior to the fight, so you see I am not taking any chances. The lttOOdol. already staked is mine if the contest does not come oil', unless I am at fault. I'll send you all the papers about it, and I'll also write about it by the mail after the match is decided. I am still buying real estate. I bought 100 ft last week with three houses. I paid 125>0d0l for them, and I am going to sell them at a big advance in a few I days. Several people are after the property. I could get more by holding it. ' If I make, a good profit T'l always sell. ''There's lots of money to be made in this Western country yet. There are lots of other towns building up fast. "If we don't come to Australia this Christmas we will come some other time. The way things look at present with business, the boxing club, etc., I guess we can't come this Christmas, but you will often hear from me just the same. "Jf Langford could have come here for Labor Day, just outside the city limits wo would lmvo drawn a 50,000d0l house." i YOUNG FITZSIMMONS IN SYDNEY. Sid Fitzsimmons. New Zealand's 20-year-oU, over Oft high, and 12st weight heavy champion, known as "Young Fitzsimmons," arrived in Sydney last week, j Sid looks "the goods." and han just what i might be termed a slight family likeness | in the face to his uncle, famous old Bob. The stranger's make differs from Bob's in that there is nothing freakish about his construction. ITis legs are good, and his build all through sturdy. The new arrival will probably he coached bv Sam MeVea. Mr W. G. Alack, the Christ, church boxing enthusiast, writes: "Young Sid. Filzsiminons left here by to-dav's boat for Sydney for the purpose of getting practice in some school there. Report i says that he was fixed up to join MeVea's camp —that is, if he lias one. Fitzsimmons is a promising lad, but you must not look for anything wonderful from him. In facial appearance he resembles his uncle Bob. Physically he is splendid. As regards boxing, he has a very good left, but what he doesn't know of the finer points would fill a book. He is game right through, and can take punching. In attack lie is pretty good, but weak in defence. Summed up, be is distinctly promising." Writes Billy ITannan from Wellington to Sydney Referee: - "1 got beaten by Allen Maxwell -here last Friday night. You sec, I was to box Murphy, but owing to him taking ■suddenly ill the match'was called off. 1 was matched to box a week later —with what mult you are -aware. I was beaten fairly. Had it. been a week earlier (the -dale on which 1 was to box Murphy) I ant sure i would have boxed much better. I was Mule—due to over trahsinar. I am to box Porter (who beat Cook Inst night, 1 ) for the 1 in-lit-weight championship of New Zealand, when I mure I'll make good."
