Hautere has been put into work again in view of contesting the Avondale (Steeplechase. After his poor displays at Marton and 1 Dannevirke it is improbable that Golden Loop will be sent to Australia. La Reina is galloping >trongly at'Elleiviic. and her chance is much favored for the Avondale Cup. Mr. I). Barry, of Hawera. a wellknown breeder of thoroughbred stock, recently purchased the stallion St. I'aul from his former owner. Brown Trout is a very unlucky horse, and finished close up again on Wednesday. The horse is quite wound up now, and may have better luck at Otaki. Bellali was omitted ill error from the telegraphed list of New Zealand Cup acceptors, and the name of Valhalla left in by mistake. The first of the progeny of Danube made its appearance recently at Wai- ( kanae. the Birkenhead mare Mistime foaling a colt to the crack son of Martian. Otahu was the rank outsider of the field for the Marton Handicap last week, and failed to g.iin a place. Strange to say. the dogs have barked it, ever since for Dannevirke. and down tlie line the Spring Handicap was voted a moral for the Wanganui horse. Starting fourth favorite, he just won. and his many backers received a fair dividend, but smaller than they expected. In the south there has been a move to back Allegory for the New Zealand Cup. Mr. G. D. Greenwood secured tlie colt at the Waikanae sales in 1910 for 8(H) guineas, but so far has had no return for his outlay. Allegory is now as good a favorite as Bronze, but his form in New South Wales has been very moderate. Perhaps some people imagine the colt will repeat Vice-Ad-miral's performance of last season. Obsono has been entered for several sprint handicaps at the Dunedin spring meeting, and will probably be brought kick from Australia this month. Longboat, who broke his back through falling in the Hack Steeple at Dannevirke. wa* a singularly unfortunate horse, wlio wa- always threatening to do big things, but never won a race. As Utiial. Longboat was well out in front when he blundered, and m falling he broke A. Julian's collarbone afresh. Glenmore i- nothing if not consistent, but the sturdy little Captain Webb gelding must be ju-t about tired of racing. Since winning the Second Hack Steeple at the Wellington autumn meeting he has l-aced at Wanganui. Eller-lie. Hastings, Trcntham, Ricearton and Dannevirke. and his best performances include victories in the Il.v.vkc'- Hay and Beaufort Steeples, second in the Winter Steeple at Ellerslie and the June Steeple at Hastings. Glenmore was a warm favorite on Wednesday, but was very stale, and finished a poor second to Don Carlos. Runaway Girl, who made a runaway race of the Trial Stakes on ednesday. is a slippery five-year-old daughter of Finland and Cicniak in Trainer A. 11 a t h - awav's stable. She was paying over half" a century in the Electric Handicap at Marton. but was never prominent. With Jenkins in the middle -he found more'.-upport at Dannevirke. and. thanks to Charley's -martlit-- at the barrier, got "a fly" and made the race a pro ces>ion only. Mr. E. J. Wat is three-year-old Moonbria (Merriwec--La Notte) was iiivcn a run in the latter race, and after netting awav badly ran up to second place. Jloonbna i- spoken of a- a ftuc-lookiiig coil, an 1 one likely to win races this sea-on. Delaware, bv Nai.m lldaval Mepfeldt. is now doing stud duty iu ( eutral (Juecii-land. Wangnmri nl } day, and are now being freely disi ;:--ed. Jn awarding Lady Lucy 9st. Mr. Mors,

had been out of the limelight for a long | time she will not find much favor for the Spring Handicap. North-East is now ' going strongly, but would be all the better for a race or two before his chances should be worth going "nap" on. Mulga Bill reads as dangerous as any of the top-weights, but the winner will probably be found lower down the list. Some promising horses figure amongst the light-weights, including Ngatimaru. Kilrain, Mangaroa, Ladrone and Serenity. Last year Fred Tilley provided the winner, in Goodwin Park, and the same trainer lias a good horse, Kilrain, to do battle for him this month. Equitas is head-and-shoulders above the crowd of moderates engaged in the Flying Handicap, most of which are hacks. Allurement won a double at the Wanganui meeting, but is now Well taken care of. and mares are hardly at their best at this time of the year. Altcar is given a chance, and on Marton form looks like proving a good stakeearner this season. Prosper is well in ' with Bst lib, and if landed at the post in his best form should give a good ac("ount of himself. The erratic Piriwai is very speedy, and might just as easily be last as first, all depending on the start. Merry Frank and Master Sylvia having a liking for the Wanganui course, : and Sty x, if recovered front his Marton i mishap, would be one of the hardest to I beat. St. Gate reads as well as any of the light-weights, and is in fine fettle just now. The Native's running in the Grand National Hurdles has earned him every pound of list 121b at Wanganui, but at 1 the weights there will be found many j preferring the chance of Koran (if well), Coronetted. Darby Paul and Sandy Paul. Frank Lind has Seaman in work again, but the chestnut is hardly class enough for open company yet awhile. The chances are that a very small field will contest the Okeliu Hurdle Race on the 2Gth inst. Big fields are practically assured for all events to be decided at the Avondale Spring meeting, which opens on the 25th inst. The Maiden Handicap 'has attracted no fewer than forty-one horses, and twenty-six figure in the Henderson Handicap. The Taranaki horses. Crown Pearl, Red Lupin. Paoli and lesser lights, will probably sport silk at the meeting, and the trio mentioned are well forward iin condition. Of the horses which contested the Avondale Cup last year the three placed horses and another arc engaged in the forthcoming race. A good three-year-old is generally hard to beat, and Prince Soult may keep La Reina. Master Wairiki and Co. busy on the day. From all accounts, train arrangements in connection with the Dannevirke races were about as bad as they could possiblv be. The train from Palmerston failed to negotiate a stiff incline, and ran bade. After a quarter of an hour's stoking up. another attempt was made, and the weary engine crawled to the course in time to miss "'only one race," as a Taranaki sport related to me. Several sports on the train had commissions for Bravest and other horses in the Hurdles, and losers are thinking of petitionimi Parliament or something. The big number of accidents taxed the club's meagre ambulance appliances, and a club talit runs three stick events —and two of them steeples—in an afternoon. , should have its Red Cross arrangements right up to date.
