ROADS AND RATES
SOUTH LAND'S EXPERIENCE. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Invercargill, Last Night. The Southland County Council to-day decided to increase the overdraft by .£3OOO, and an increase, of rates was foreshadowed. It was stated that country roads were in a bad condition, due to the fact that £1 did not do nearly as much work as it did a few years ago. County Councillor Millar said that the rates should be increased in prosperous times, so as to not leave a big overdraft to pay interest on during a period of depression. Complaints were made that much damage was done to the roads b_y motor cars, and a committee was appointed to consider what could be done to make owners contribute towards road maintenance.
