A LONELY LIFE. % Cable—Press Association—Copyright. New York. September 12. Jack Johnson's wife is dead. Before shooting herself she prayed with two colored maids, asking mercy on her loneliness. Johnson savs the woman was suffering from a nervous attack. SUICIDE WHILE INSANE. JOHNSON'S SUICIDAL MANIA. Received 13, 11 p.m. New York, September 13. Johnson, at the inquest on his wife, said that her nervous breakdown was due to nursing him when he was suffering from suicidal mania, resulting from injuries reeeived in fighting Jeffries. Johnson declared that he was still feeling the after-effects of the fight. His wife knew this, and was greatly depressed. Johnson asserts that he tried to choke himself to death on several occasions, but his wife saved him. A verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned.
