There was no .connection between Armours, Swifts and the other big companies. The business started in Brisbane was entirely Swifts. There was no English capital • the business. He declined to say iv.iether he intended to start business in other States. The company was not • oing to do local business at present, but ' <j did not know what it would have to * ..o. He was prepared to tell the eomli'ission anything. The company had notaing to hide. Tie accounted for the increased price of meat as the result ot the increase of population and prosperity in the United States, and the consequent reduction of exports. Mr. McCowen states that, in view of rumors, n watchful eye is being kept to prevent the possibility of the Beef Trust getting a hold on the meat industry in New South Wales.
