Emile Rousset, a soldier in 1909, saw a lieutenant anil two sergeants ill-treat-ing a soldier serving a punitive term in an Algerian regiment. The soldier was exhausted by heat and thev crammed salt into his mouth and left* him to die in the desert. Rousset reported the incident and was thereupon thrown into prison for two years, until General Rabier was sent to Morocco to enquire into the charge and ordered his release and the arrest of the lieutenants and sergeants Rousset was re-arrested two days before their trial and charged with murdering a comrade and sentenced to twenty years' imprisonment. The lieutenant and sergeants were released. The witnesses against Rousset now admit perjury and .the prosecutor states that he was deceived.
