POLICE GRAFT.
SENSATIONAL EVIDENCE. By Cable—Preea Association—Copvright. \ New York, September 11. Mr. Gaynor, Mayor of the City of New York, giving evidence at the police investigation, admitted that three million dollars graft was paid yearly to the police by the liquor interests. Recently this had been entirely suppressed. While the force was certain to contain a proportion of incompetent and untrustworthy men. the general level of efficiency was higher than ever before. He admitted that burglary insurance rates in New York had jumped 35 per cent, weekly.
