CIVIL SERVICE BILL.
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. A deputation from the Civil Service Association interviewed the Minister for Justice to-day in connection with the Public Service Bill. Mr. Allport, president, said that the Civil Service was pleased with the Bill, and 'hoped that it would become law, but there were some pointy to be brought before the Minister. The deputation suggested that a member of the service who used political influence to better his position should not be immediately dismissed, but should be suspended witih a view to an enquiry. Several suggestions were made as to the powers of the commissioner and assistants. "The salaries of the latter should be raised from XSOO to £IOOO. Tn the Case of appeals, appellant should be allowed to be represented bv counsel. The deputation also asked that the retirin" age be fixed at 65. The Minister said he approved of a great many of the suggestions put forward, and would, if possible, give effect to them. The constitution of the board was the chief matter Ho 'had adopted the New South Wales system as the best suited to New Zealand. lie did not think there was any serious objection to appellants being allowed to employ counsel. He wag prepared to move an amendment to provide for regulations bein<r made by the Governor-in-Counci], not ly ,'he Gover- '.• He would leave the ("v-:pulsorv retiring age alone, and he e-1 not want to interfere with the Superannuation Act.
