BOWLING.
WEST END CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING-.
The annual meeting of the above club was held in the Council Chambers last evening. Mr. F. J. Hill presided over a good attendance of members. The receipts showed ft balance of £l3 16s 8d oyer expenditure, and the balance-sheet too very 'satisfactory amount of assets over liabilities amounting to £lßfi 2s 2d, which must be considered gratifying to the club.
The chairman, in presenting the annual report for the season- 1911-12, congratulated the members on the continued prosperity and success of the club. During the past season extensive improvements to the club's property had been effected, chief of which was the erection of an iron fence, which affords splendid shelter to the green and is greatly appreciated by members. The path on the western side has been asphalted, i'-us abating the dust nuisance, which was a source of trouble. During the season a much larger roller than the one previously in use had been purchased, by t'lie aid of which our painstaking caretaker had been enabled to effect a wonderful improvement in the condition of the green. Since the green was closed for play it had been completely top-dressed and levelled, and the committee hoped that for the coming season it would compare favorably with other greens in the province. In consequence of the Taranaki Provincial Tournament being held here -this season the. three local greens would be required; and it is to be hoped that all members will generously assist the committee in making the gathering a complete success. Owing to the pressure of business, Mr. 0. V. Firth resigned the position of president, and Mr. F. J. Hill was elected to fill the vacancy. The club has, been .unfortunate in losing a number of members during the past season through removel from the district, and in losing the. late secretary, Mr. Bigelow, the club suffered a severe loss, and in recognition of serwees rendered lie; was unanimously elected a life member of the club. The club was represented at the annual tournament of the, Taranaki Bowling Association, held at Patea in February, and although they were not in the placed division tTiev gave
r. very creditable account of themselves. In the banner competition, although the club were unable to win the coveted prize they at least won some of the matches, and they hoped that during the coming season the club would he more successful. The club desires to thank Messrs. 0. N. Firth for rink trophies, F. J. Hill championship trophy, R. Robottom handica-p singles trophy, and Mr. S. Avery for donation of a trophy for competition amongst members. A suggestion had been made thai the club lav down a, winter green during the coming season, and, should funds ,)ermit, it is to be hoped that the clu<j will see their way clear to effect this improvement, which would undoubtedly mean increased revenue.
The treasurer's report showed thaf during the past season the finau'ial position of the club had been strengthened, notwithstanding the heavy expenditure incurred during the past season. During the winter months a series of euchre parties had been held, whereby the funds of the club have been considerably augmented. ' •
