SPORTING.
TUUF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Very big acceptances have Leon received for ail events at the Dannevirke It.O. spring meeting to-day, and if a fair proportion of those paid up for sport silk, hackers will find winners very hard to select. Winners at the Marton meeting will be required to put up 10lb penalty to-day. The revised weights are as follows: Hack Hurdles, Fashion Plate 10.6; Umataroa Handicap, Ngatimaru 0.6; Spring Hack, Blend 7.9; Open Steeplechase, Kelp 10.8; Welter Handicap, Ngatiinaru 10.5, and Blend 9.5; Hack Steeplechase, Kelp 11.5, and Wheturangi 11.3.
The sale of The Native for 400 guineas is reported from the south. A Wellington' scribe is responsible for the statement that Kgatimaru is an unlikely starter at Dannevirke to-day. Brown Trout ran splendidly at Marton, finishing up fast just outside a place, and will carry a lot of money in the big race at Dannevirke. Silver Bullet was given a run at Sandown Park on the 31st ult;., but was not mentioned in the betting, and ran accordingly.
Gay Lawless is reported to be galloping well, and should snatch a lieat shortly. Some fair steeplechasers figure in the open steeple at Dannevirke, and if Whakaweira' and Glenmore start the race should be worth watching. Bronze, Ermengarde and a whole host of New Zealand-bred 'horses figure in the entries for Tattersall's spring meeting, which takes place on Saturday next. The Taranaki Cup winner, Uhlando, figures in the .big lace at Dannevirke with 7.10, and as the little horse has been going well lately lie may run forward. Mr. H. Eva has stuck to Uhlando despite continuous disappointments, and he certainly deserves a change of luck. Coolbeggan shaped well at Marton, and the gallop should sharpen up the Hawke's Bay horse for forthcoming engagements. A Sydney paper publishes a list of winning riders at recent suburban meet-' ings in the metropolitan area, and from that, it appears that 1!. Deeley has had seven mounts for one win. and C. Emmerson's record reads: Thirteen starts, V/ 2 wins, 1 second, and 2 thirds. Emmerson 'had been doing well at the country meeting*, and is sure to "make good" on the other side.
Otahu has been going in good style on the Wanganui tracks, anil local touts are picking the bay sou of Nestor to win a good race shortly. At Marton iie was turned the wrong way when the tapes Hew skywards, and he made a poor chase o£ a stern-chase. Little Whimper showed a surprising turn of speed in running into a place behind St. Self and Postillion at Marton, and being a line jumper should be worth noting for forthcoming stick events.
Fashion Plate boat Strathmoira rather easily last week, but the latter will be meeting the Keilding mare on 111b better terms at Dannevirke. and this should just about bring the pair together. The Taranaki. sportsman, Mr. Barry, recently purchased Jiatl News, dam of lioyal News, Welcome Xews and other higli-elass horses.
ft. Paul was offered at auction th,e other day, but the 20-year-old stallion was passed in at 105 guineas. Sir Lethe, in charge of R. Gray, will be shipped to Sydney on Friday. An Auckland paper states that the St. Paul gelding Tobias is now in steady work wider W. Sha.-p's care at Filerslie. The locally owned Campfire. (by Carbine) got a good advertisement when Lady Louisa scored in easy fashion at Marton. Campfire has not had many chances in Taranaki, but his stock is well spoken of. The "Highden" horses are getting through serviceable work at Eandwickj and are creating a rood impression. Ermengarde is going oarticularly well, and should run well at the A.J.C. spring meeting next month. The use of long names in racehorse nomenclature is not desirable, and turfites usually cut them down from the sublime to the ridiculous. The two-year-old colt by SouU-TTcsper has been named "First King of Scots," and will probably be commonly known as just plain "Pcotf y."
A oonlempo.rirv with a T.nania for stn-ti.-lirs .-Inle-' that Pnrihilu vm hi-; 127! h race at Rfccarton last month. His record read!-': 20 firsts. 25 seconds. 20 •thirds. and In' w.is unplaced on 02 occasions.
