A Parliamentary paper on cable reductions to Australasia states that during the first quarter 40,450 words were sent at deferred rates, while the number sent at normal rates showed an increase. The volume of press business was unaffected, but about half of that was sent at deferred rates. The profit on the operation of the Pacific cable for the year was £37.045, the deficit, including all liabilities, being £40,498. The report emphasises the necessity for future Australian-Canadian mail contracts proI viding for the boats to call at Fanning Island.
