CRIME AND CRIMINALS.
AMERICANS IN AUSTRALIA. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, September 5. Many recent robberies in Sydney are attributed to American criminals. An American youth was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment for snatching a bag containing £2O. Cuttings of American newspapers were read indicating tliat accused had been convicted of sticking up in a saloon in California. The judge imposed a probationary sentence of five years, conditional on his spending the term with an uncle in Australia. The Crown Prosecutor declared that American judges had a delightful way of sentencing a prisoner to probation, otherwise sending him out of the country, and for some time past had apparently been sending them to Australia.
