For the match at the Oval between Australia and a combined team reprc- !; senting Middlesex and Surrey the weather was fine, but there was a cool breeze. 'Tlio attendance was only moderate. Rain fell early, but the pitch was protected through the night and was in fairly good condition. The outfield was bad. There was a delay of thirty minutes before a start was made. Among those present was William Cofl'yn, an old Surrey player, aged . 84 years. Her.dren was omitted and Carkeck' was playing. Tlie Australians won the toss and Mayne and Jennings opened. The team made an excellent showing throughout, features of the innings being the partnership of Bardsley and Minnett, who added 56 for the fifth wicket, and Bardsley and Hazlitt, who added 91 for the sixth. Fifty went up in 70 minutes, and the century in 120 minutes, the 200 being hoisted in 215 minutes. Bardsley was out in trying to turn Hitch. His innings was perfect J and chanceless. He played a splendid game on the log side. ITe hit eleven fours and eight threes. He batted tor 200 minutes and reached his century in > Kit) minutes. The spectators were treated to some brilliant hitting in the partnership between Bardsley and Minnett. Stumps were drawn at 5.35, owing to darkness. Emery was hit on the hand by the last ball.
