KILLED BY SNOWSTORMS

MORTALITY AMOXG SHEEP. AMUR I STATION 1 - OWXERS LOSE HEAVILY. Christeliureh, Monday. Last season the losses of sheep caused by snowstorms in the Amuri district were very heavy. On Molesworth and Tarndale stations the loss was estimated at 17,000, on St. Helens at 12,000, and on St. James at 8000, making a total on the three stations of 37,000 sheep. These figures, it is stated on good authority, will be exceeded this year. At present it is quite impossible to even guess the numbers. Mr. Fordo Johnston, of the Hossack station, informed a correspondent of the Lyttelton Times that he had found 200 dead sheep within half a mile of the homestead, but he had been unable to get to the back country owing to the depth of snow. Mr. Leishman, of St. James, admits that the losses, when ascertained, will be very heavy. Most of the St. Helens sheep were turned out in good condition, but the manager expects a very heavy mortality. Mr. lianmer Atkinson, of Woodbank, and Mr. Scott, of Rogerson Valley, also report heavy losess, and on Molesworth station the loss will exceed that of last season. These heavy losses, coming on the top of those of last season, are a very serious matter for runholders in the" North Amuri.
