Stratford News

From our Resident Reporter. BURGLARY. Some time (hiring Saturday night or - Sunday morning the Egmont Ten Kooms i were burglariously ortered, the irant . door being forced open. Mr. and Mrs. Barlow left late on Saturday night, and were very particular to lock the door. , fortunately, for them, they were equally . wu'eful to empty the till/and. with the exception of a *n:all quantity of sweets, the intruders got little for their trouble. AN HISTORIC PICTURE. Mr. F. G. Arden, of Stratford, and one of the men who fought the Maoris for us in years gone by, has in his possession a water-color painting of the old Bell ! Block redoubt. The picture was the work of his father, and is in all regpects a splendid sample of the painter's art. Mr. Arden lent the picture for reproduction purposes to Mr. Will Diamond, scenic artist and manager of His Majesty's Theatre, and he has now painted an excellent enlarged copy of it, probably about Bft. x 4ft., to form part of the interior decoration of the theatre. i The old blockhouse, with its watchtowers, the palisading behind which the Imperials were camped in tents, the signalling posts, and the cook-houses in the foreground, are all well brought out, and old Egmont makes a fine Dackr ground. The chances are that many an old New Plymouth-ite would like to see i I this very line reproduction of a fort j j which played no small part in the early history of Taranaki. It is rather a !

Stratford people are evidently not alone in th»ir opinion that the .Stratford A.'& P. Show is de.-tined always to be "the" cattle show of the province. The Council of the New Zealand Jersey breeders' Association decided, at it's meeting the other day, to donate a handsome trophy for competition at the Stratford A &. P. Association's show. ' The trophy will be awarded for a pen , of three pedigree Jersey cows in milk, , shown by the breeder, and is to become the property of the exhibitor winning it ' three times, not necessarily three times in succession. A fanner who read my paragraph concerning Ihe capabilities of ' 'J'aranaki land interviewed me to-day and told me a lot about the "pocket-hook' land agents, who, without office or banknig account, pestered (he lives out of people visiting the town. He considered that the registration of land agents should be made compulsorv, with a view of confining the business to reputable firm*, such, for instance, as will be found advertising in the Daily Xews.
