THE REEFTON STRIKE. By Telegraph—Press Association. llecfton, Last Night. Mr. A. W. Evans, general superintendent of the Consolidated, Progress and Blackwater Companies, wrote to the Inangalma Miners' Union, on Augiis t 22, suggesting that a settlement be arrived at under the Arbitration Court Act, 1898, not the Industrial and Conciliation Act The full text is published in this evening's local paper. He suggests that all matters in dispute be referred to two arbitrators, one for each /party, and that an umpire be mutually decided on l)3 r the arbitrators; or, in the event of disagreement, by the president of the Arbitration Court; that all questions in dispute be settled by the arbitrators; that in ease, of failure the arbitrators to agree that the umpire's decision s.hall be final; both parties to pledge themselves to agree to the decision and restart work, the cost of arbitration to be fixed by the arbitrators and paid for by each party, as the arbitrators or umpire shall determine. The above was put forward as a suggestion. The Miners' Union secretary has replied, stating that the suggestion has been discussed at a meeting of the union and referred to the Federation of Labor executive. The secretary of the Miners' Union has left for Wellington in regard to tin? Tunnel Commission. THE WAIHI STRIKE. Wai'hi, Last Night. Several lively scenes are reported from Waikino in connection with the appearance of the company's staff in the township yesterday. It is alleged that attempts at intimidation were made. There had been no interference while the men are at work, as trespassers are rigorously barred from private property, but insulting and offensive remarks are being made to thn men 011 their way to and from work. The police have taken no action. The arbitrationists are, however, holding the fort. A straight-out fight between an arbitrationist and a federationist took place at Waikino this morning.
