LAND FOR SETTLEMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hastings, Last Night. Mellae Peacock's Waihau estate, of 0102 acres, has been purchased by the Government, and will be taken over on March 12. It is suitable for mixed farming, and is situated on the proposed Hastings-Puketitiri tramway line, about 45 miles from Hastings. STREET ORATORY. Hastings, Last Night. Mr. Withy held a street meeting last night, the subject of his address being ''The United Labor Party and the High Cost of Living." An audience numbering about fifty was not in accord with his views, and subjected him to continual interruptions. Much of bis time was occupied by debating side issues with persistent opponents. At the conclusion of his address he invited questions, and a lively time followed. The audience closed in, and the police dispersed' the meeting. . THE OTJRA TUNNEL. Christchureh, Last Night. The Mayor is convening a conference of representatives of local bodies to consider the position regarding the Otira tunnel contract, and the matter of urging upon the Government the necessity of keeping work going.
