SPORTING.
TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Excellent acceptances were received on Monday evening for the Egmont-Wanga-liiu Hunt meeting to be held at Wanganui to-day, and "although the tinkle of the tote and the roar of the ring will ho mi,saing the gathering promises to be a highly enjoyable and sporting one. Some fair performers will be given a run in the various evants, notably Reket, Sea Wind, Consul, Cavil, Flying Cloud, Flamingo, Riro Atu and Jack, in the stick events, and St. Lumsden, Katua, Aviatrix, St. Helena, Nebulous and Epsom Downs in the fiat races. Nominations for the Wanganui J.C. Spring meeting are well up to the average, and most of the leading Taranaki horses figure on the lists. Weights are not due until September 13. . Crown Pearl has been paid l up for for the Railway Handicap {six furlongs) at Marton. and will be hot stuff for that event if he sees the poet. Black Northern, whose arrival in Sydney was announced yesterday by cable, will be ridden by Rangi Thompson in his Australian engagements. Outward is said to be galloping well, and should run well in the Electric Handicap (five furlongs) at Marton. When Mr. J. George returned from Ricearton last week he brought back with him an .untried four-year-old by Royal Artillery—Leonore. The Frenchman likes hk little bit of betting, as was shown when the pari mutuel investments on the recent Grand Prix de Paris reached the tidy sum of £200,000. It is a far cry to the Wanganui Guineas, and final payments are not due until September 3, but most of last year's crack two-year-olds figure in the race. Autummis should be hard to heat, if well, but the stable also shelters two other candidates, Winning Way and Brown Owl. Others engaged are Bon Reve, Bon Ton, Bon Soir, Monoline, Haskayne, Glade, Prince Soult, Multiply and Our King. The first acceptances for the New Zealand Cup fall due on September G, and the weed-out promises to commence in real earnest on that day. Hurdle races in the Dominion this spring should not be hard to win, the absence of Continuance, Paisano, Black Northern, Captain Jingle, Don Queux and other cracks in Australia giving the second raters a chance to distinguish themselves. Take away a dozen leading hurdlers and cross-country horses, and the rest are mere moderates. North-East and St. Gate are getting through fast work on the Wanganui tracks, and appear to be quite forward enough for spring racing. The New Zealander Royal Scotch is a pronounced favorite for" the Caulfield Cup. At his last run he won the Canterbury J.C. Great Easter Handicap, seven furlongs, with 8.13, in lmin. 2(5 3-Ssec, but his de?d« in public have not given a lino as to whether he is a stayer. ,
