From our Resident Reporter. OPEZLITIC SOCIETY. The Stratford Operatic Society held its aniiuiil meeting on Mondaj', when the attendance was but moderate. Captain Lampen occupying the chair. The secretary's interim balance-sheet showed a cash balance of ,C 52, with £2O yet beI in» outstanding. There was thus a net ! profit on the three performances of £72. Mr. Ceo. Bond and Captain Lampeu were added to the casting an.-! wl:rtion committee, which now comp: : -as Dr. Carbery, Captain Lampcn, and Messrs. T. U. ('irul)b (conductor) and Bond. ]t was decided to hold a social, evening for members and their friends, with the idea of commencing a series of socials covering the period during which the Society is not holding practices. Votes of thanks, were passed to the conductor and secretary for their services. The Society also extended its good wishes to the Stratford Dramatic Society, and volunteered to assist them with their forthcoming production of "Our Regiment." The secretary reported that several members' subscriptions were still outstanding, and hoped that these would not be overlooked. As a result of this intimation, the obliging secretary "lifted" half-a-crown from a panting lady in Broadway yesterday. Others, please note! CARDIFF DAIRY COMPANY. The twenty-firs:'annual meeting of the. Cardilf Dairy Company was held on Monday in the Card ill' Schoolroom. Mr. W. Richards (chairman) presided. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the chairman alluded to the fact that it was their twentyfirst annual meeting, and congratulated the shareholders on the' excellent position of the company's affairs. The building and plant, he said, were practically free of debt, the remaining overdraft was represented merely by shares m the Egmont Box Company and the Taranaki Freezing Company. In ,reply to a .shareholder, the secretary gave a comparison of -the working expenses with cignt other factories in Taranaki. and other districts, from which it appeared that the factory was run more economically than the average fac-. lory. Messrs. M'eFadgeiv, Smith and Stewart, who retired by rotation,' were reelected directors. Mr. A. Coleman was re-appointel auditor. At a meeting of the directors Mr. W. Richards was re-elected chairman. ' STRAY PARAGRAPHS. The borough councillors had another ] "go"'at the loan proposals on Mon'day j night. The big discussion on Cr. King's motion concerning the Patea bridge, his idea being to reverse a previous decision of the Council, was further deferred, Mr. King being unable to attend the meeting. The Borough Council has decided to assist in getting'telephone communication with the Mountain House, standing one-third of the "racket.'' providing the County Council and the Egmont National Park Board (or the East Egmont .Mountain House Commute") "will do likewise.

Reverting to the question of the nightwatchman, and the need for protection by night in the business portion of the town, a business uian asked me yesterday when the Borough Council was'going to have Broadway decently lighted. Nobody seems to know. The fact remains, though, that there is a good deal of.reason for the complaint, for the lighting of Broadway is anything but. good, .ft is better than no light at all, and for this let us be duly thankful.

Having just about settled all the school teams in Taranaki against whom Cn-y have been pilled, our Stratford District High School footballers,-under the iharge of the popular teacher and exTaranald rep., Mr. ."loe Thomas, left yesterday morning by the express, seeking other fields to conquer. They were, to have played at Wa'nganni yesterday, and will meet Wellington to-morrow, returning home' on Saturday.

'Messrs. Roberts and Christophers have been requested by the Borough Council to report on the drainage of the northeast portion of the borough, the best scheme, and the estimated cost. They will also report on the necessity or otherwise of constructing a new septic tank. The ■borough overseer, who has of late been asked for reports and estimates concerning works innumerable, is to report on extensions of the present service.

At St. Andrew's schoolroom- on Monday evening a very successful social was held, the arrangements having been imule by the Ladies' Cuild and the Choir, flames, music and mirth were the order of the i»\ fiiiijjv. with the inevitable competition.-. The musical programme contained items of real merit, comprised as follows:—Violn s.-b). Mi-, B. Morison; recitations. Messrs. Patrick and Stewart; sonp;s.. Mi.-s Savav/e. M. Maekav. Dramas are on the same high level as usual, those with a smack of Wild West adventure v ,in them appealing strongly to the taste of the Stafford people. The comics are real side-split-ters. During this, evening Mr. Sid. Bernard will repeat last night's xylophone solo, ''Folic* Bergeres March," for which he gained a well-merited encore.
