NOVEL REQUEST TO JUDGE.
Auckland, August 20. Convicted on charges of having stolen from the hotel premises of J. -J. Pagni the amount of £5 10s and a number of coins, and also an amount of jewellery and £3 10s in cash from the hotel premises of Thomas Lough nan, Robert Long appeared for sentence before Judge Cooper at the Supreme Court to-day. Accused's record showed that he had a long list of convictions for theft against him, the offences having been committed in various parts of the Dominion and Commonwealth. i
His Honor stated that, in the interests of the pubLic at large, accused must be detained for a long period. He would be sentenced to three years' imprisonment with hard labor and to ten years' .reformative treatment. "1 did think of declaring you an habitual criminal," said his Honor, "and technically I hava power to do so."
Accused: "I prefer to be declared an habitual, your Honor. I understand that there is no gratuity attached to the reformative treatment."
His Honor: "Very well, at your own request I will sentence you to three years' imprisonment, and declare you an habitual criminal. It is the first time that such a request has ever been made to me."
