UNIVERSITY SYSTEM
SUGGESTED REFORM,
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington. Monday. University reform was brought under the notice of the I'rime Minister and the Minister of Education by a deputation to-day. It was explained that last session the Education Committee of the House reported in favor of a change in the constitution of the'Senate-and the system generally. The deputation asked that an outside expert be appointed to made an independent and exhaustive report to the Government. One of the speakers suggested that a commission should be appointed to inquire into the proposed reform of the university system. What they called an education system was not, fee declared, a system at all —it was merely a good system of public instruction. The Prime Minister said the question of education reform appealed to the Reform Government. Regarding the suggestion that the teaching stall' should have more say in connection with the government of education, he said the Inspector-General was reporting on that subject. As to finance, he believed Wellington University charges were lower than those of any other centre. He was strongly of opinion that there; should be uniformity in fees. As to the setting up of a commission, -he would submit the proposal to his colleagues.
