When Congress was about to adjourn, Senator La Follette raised the ArchboldKoosevelt controversy, demanding a complete investigation. The situation was further complicated by a telegraphic demand from Mr. Roosevelt, asking leave to appear before the investigating committee and explain Mr. Archliold's allegations. Mr. Rooseevlt ■was prepared to offer in evidence letters sent to Mr. Cortelyou in 1!'04. when he learned of the Standard Oil Company's contributions towards the campaign funds. The letters show that Mr. Roosevelt ordered the contribution to be returned.
