POULTRY INDUSTRY.
DEPUTATION TO THE PRIME MINISTER.
By Telegraph—Own Correspor.dent, Wellington, Last Night
A deputation representing the poultry industry of New Zealand, from as la* north as Auckland and as far south as Dunedin, waited on the Prime Minister (the Hon. W. F. Massey) to-day. to urge the encouragement of the poultry export 'trade. It was represented by the deputation that there was a market for eggs in Honolulu and Vancouver, and that it was the duty of the Government to encourage the opening up of such markets. It was further suggested that the Government should make it compulsory that all preserved eggs should be branded, and sold as such; that more use should tie made of the experimental farms in connection with the poultry industry. There was great need, it wis represented, for the dissemination of knowledge concerning poultry-raising. Mr. John Studholme (Canterbury) asked that the Government should make a persistent and constant endeavor to encourage the industry, because it could be made one of the greatest adjuncts of the small or allotment farmer.
In reply, the Prime Minister said that the Government would do everythng it possibly could to assist the export trade. He would instruct the Department to make the necessary enquiries. He agreed that there were possibilities of tradu with Vancouver, and the Government might go the length of assisting in a trial shipment. So far as the stamping of eggs was concerned, it would be necessary to pass legislation before that could he done. The expenditure on poultry farms had been very great; in fact it rather staggered him. Before the Government could do any more it would he necessary to go very carefully into thw matter.
