Trow o«r Resident Reporter. STRAT3?OSD RACING CLUB . The committee of the Stratford Racing Club has appointed Mr. G. D. Hunter to the position of secretary of the club, in succession to the late Mr. J. R. Mackay. Mr. Hunter was acting-secre-tary during the lengthy illness of his predecessor, and the manner in which he carried out the duties then augurs well for the future conduct of the club's business. He liad charge of the arrangements for the Stratford races at New dear's time, and thus takes office with a good grip of the work. One of the first and most necessary attributes of an official of this kind is approachableness, and another important one is tact. Jn liis term as acting-secretary, and in the several honorary secretaryships with which he has been associated, Mr Hunter has shown himself to be courteous and tactful, and he should do justice to tke position he has now been selected to I fill.
STRAY PARAGRAPHS. The annual ball of the North Taranaki Hunt is to be held in the Theatre Royal, New Plymouth, on Thursday next, the night of the Wellington-Tara-naki football match; and I understand that a number of Stratford people will be present. Sonje do not deserve fine weather. I I' inedaj, I remarked to one of my .farmer friends this morning. • The re- | mark was, quite unnecessary, of course, for anyone but a blind man could see ; that it was a line day. "Yes," he grudgingly. "But it's too fine to last!" V\iiat are you going to do with a man like that, after our recent long spell of glorious weather?
'Mr. W. Brooking is having a couple of small shops erected •in Regan street central, just alongside the railway line. The new offices for the Electric Light Company are Hearing completion. Mr. N. J. King, the contractor, seems to De making a fine job of the place. Mr. Geo. Burgess, who lost a piece of his finger the other day in a planing machine, is not getting along as well as he expected, and lias been ordered to Rotorua. He will get away during the coming week.
The half-yearly meeting of the Egmont Club wa_s - held on Friday evening when a very satisfactory interim report and balance-sheet were presented. Se.veial matters of interest to members were discussed, and suggestions made for still further improving what is admitted to be one of the best-managed clubs of its kind in the Dominion. It should be mention, too, that it is probably the best-, housed club of its kind in New Zealand,' the comfort of members having been studied in every way. A. genuine autograph of the late Grand Old Man" of the Salvation Army is on view in Messrs. Dixon ,& Co.'* window.
I It is understood that the Stratford • Electrical Supply Company has declined to vary the street-lighting contract, as | asked or suggested by the Borough ! Coun cil. The idea was that the cost i ? ei ' "g ht P e r annum might be reduced if the street lights were extinguished late at night, but as there is little demand tor the current between midnight and daylight, except for street lights, the company see no reason to alter the existing arrangements, all this having been taken lhto consideration when the tariff was arranged. The Borough Council's Fire Brigade Committee has ordered from Palmerston a horse reel, ladder, lamp, etc. for the Fire Brigade. The apparatus in use at the present time is a man-killing piece of goods, and the firemen will be to-date 6 ° mething !! S hter a »d more up-
■Strollers on the railway platform frequently remark on the ingenuity of one orthe numerous Chinese fruiterers, who disposes of his empty fruit cases by stacking them neatly across his back boundary, thus erecting a high wall whicn ensures a privacy that is unknown to most of his neighbors. This wall is now nearly .is high as the adjoining buildings. Should a fire break out in the locality they will form a dankp reckoned with, for their light stuff is highly inflammable. It is a matter that should be seen to by the proper authorities. The Borough Council' way or may not have jurisdiction, a» the building and the wall of boxes are on Crown land.
Rehearsals of "Our Regiment" are reported to be progressing very satisfactonly.
The insertion of a wrong figure in one of my notes on the Stratford Page on .-aturday morning was rather a serious matter. A farmer in this district wm thereby credited with having a herd Of cows which averaged eight hundred pounds of butter-fat per eow for the season. It should have read three hundred.
BERNARD'S PICTURES. To-night the . management of His Majesty's Theatre will introduce one of the most brilliant programmes -pet screened. This new series, besides including three of the popular CowboyIndian type of story, -embraces every other class of subject, and is calculated to please the most exacting of tastes. e principal is an A.B, Company's story, with Hiss Mary Piekford as the heroin?. This film, "lola's Promise," shows how a little Indian maid paid her debt of gratitude, and is one of the most beautiful dramatic novelties ever released. Two thrilling Essaany films,, made in Western America, are "The Deputy and the Girl" and "Tracked Down." Another notable drama comes from Vilagraph Studio, the title of this 1,, ;ng "The Law and the Lady," a story illustrating the apparently insurmountable barriers dividing the rich and the poor.
