CHARGE OF COW-STEALING. By Telegraph, —Press Association. Palmerston N., Saturday. Henr3 r Woolland appeared before the Magistrate to-day to answer to a charge of stealing two cowS, the property of a local resident. He reserved his defence, and was committed for trial at the next sittings of the' Supreme Court at Wanganui. Bail of £IOO was allowed. Accused was a farmer near Pahiatua. THE GORE COURT-MARTIAL. Gore, Saturday. The finding in the court-martial charge against Sergeant-Major Sutton on a charge of insubordination was that accused was guilty. Sutton was sentenced to take rank and precedence as if his appointment to the rank of staffsergeant ibore date one day. subsequent to the date of his appointment a3 ser-geant-major. The sentence was confirmed by the convening officer. Sutton resumed "duty yesterday at Balfour. SOUTH IS LAM J .MATN TRUNK. Wellington, Saturday. A large deputation waited on the Government to-day to press the claims of the South Island Trunk continuation. Representatives were present from Christchurch, Blenheim, and Kaikoura, as well as Sir J. Ward, Messrs. R. McKenzie, Russell and other members. In reply, the Minister said railway construction largely depended on loan trjoney, and the Government would he Unwise to approach London for money at present. He thought the request of the deputation a reasonable one, and they could depend on its receiving that consideration to which it was entitled. THE ESCAPED PRISONERS. Wellington. Saturday. The prisoners Bergerson and Paul, who escaped from gaol, were brought before the court to-day and sentenced to three months' imprisonment, cumulative on the terni3 they are at present aerving.
