NOTORIOUS GAMBLER.
ROGERS'S HISTORY. By Gable.—Press Association.—Copyright Received 25, 5.5 p.m. London, August 24. Rogers was a noted gambler. During the 'Yukon gold rush he ran a saloon known as Monte Carlo, and made and lost fortunes nightly. He was a man of commanding personality. He was shot 1 at and wounded during a dispute in the Yukon. His assailant was tried and sentenced.
A cablegram received on August 21 states that a Sudan Government expedition, under the command of Captain Fox, endured great hardships for two months in a chase in the Lado Enclave after a hundred elephant poachers, under the leadership of Rogers, an American, who was charged with infringing the sleep-ing-sickness proclamation. Captain Fox's party unwittingly entered the Belgian Congo, when the poachers came up. Rogers fired on the advance guard, wounding four men. and during the fusilajde Rogers himself was shot m the hip. 'awl subsequently died. Captain Fox apologised to the Belgian Commandant, who arrested Rogers' companions.
