CAMPAIGN EXPENSES. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Washington, August 23. Senator Dixon has published a statement that the campaign expenses of the Progressives will not exceed £30,000. The stories of excessive spending are untrue. MUD-THROWING. ROOSEVELT'S VIGOROUS RETORT. New York, August 23. Mr. Roosevelt, replying to Senator Penrose, compares him to a cuttlefish, squirting ink when attacked by an enemy. Mr. Roosevelt flatly denies all Senator Penrose's charges. It is, he says, a base and contemptible thing on Senator Penrose's part, to repeat slanders on hearsay evidence. Air. Roose velt declares that during the 1904 campaign he sent letters to the campaign committee forbidding the receipt of anv campaign funds from the Standard Oil [ Company. ROOSEVELT'S DENIAL: GRAVE ALLEGATIONS. Received 25, 5.5 p.m. New York, August 24. Roosevelt denied Archbold's charges in toto. He knew nothing of any contribution from the Standard Oil Company. He added that Archbold made many appeals to him not to prosecute the Standard Oil Company. Roosevelt insinuatedthat Senator Penrose's relations with Archbold, when Senator Penrose was a member of the Industrial Committee, would not bear investigation. He had to thank liia assailants for showing the United States that Roosevelt was the only man the big interests had to fear.
