CUSTODY OF A CHILD SOUGHT. By Telegraph.—Press Aefiociation. Dunedin, Last Night. Before Justice Sir J. Williams to-day a married couple, named Lawrence, formerly of Greymouth, now residing at Hobaft, applied for a writ of habeas corpus, to gain custody of their child, now adopted by a family named Gregory at Greymouth. There were no allegations concerning the treatment of the child, which was well looked after, but it was alleged that there was no order for adoption completed, and the mother, having regained her health, desires to obtain the custody of the child. Tht case was not concluded. AUCKLAND MURDER CASE. Auckland, Last Night. At the Supreme Court to-day Tamehana Wirepa was charged with the murder oFhis' younger brother (Te Hamana'' Wirepa), and also wounding, with intent Wm. Nowland and Tunatare Wirepa. The charge was the result of a quarrel on June 5, at a Maori pa, near Tekaha, Bay of Plenty, where the principles concerned had been drinking together. The defence was that accused was drunk, and was not in a' fit state to know what he was doing, having no intention of committing murder. The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter, and Judge Cooper sentenced the accused to seven years' imprisonment.
