Mr. S. Pitt is back in New Plymouth from a visit to Australia.

Mr. James Sinclair has returned to New Plymouth from the Old Country. Mr, Ben. M. Wilson has been appointed general manager of the Tourist and Health Resorts Department, vice Mr. F. S. Pope resigned. Mr. Wm. H. Frethey has been appointed chief clerk to the same Department, A Thames telegram announces the death of Captain Swindley, chairman of the Ooromandcl County Council, . the Licensing Commission, and occupant of other public positions. He was wellknown throughout the Auckland province. He held an Imperial commission and saw service in Ipdia.

An item of social 'news that is of interest is the announcement which has just been made of the approaching marriage of Miss Thelma Reid, daughter of Sir George and Lady Reid, with Mr. Jadk I'layfair, son of Mr. Edmund Playfair, of Sydney. It is understood :.that the wedding will take place in Sydney in June of next year. :\

At a special meetingof the Napier Borough Council fest night, I/O deal with •applications, 68 in number, 'for the position of clerk of works for the electric lighting and tramway schemes, Mr. Bkck, consulting engineer, was authorised to make a final selection from Messrs. Clough (Auckland), Swinburne (Hastings h O'Neil (Dunedin), and Carrick (Gibbprne), and report te the Council as early as posfeible.

The death occurred yesterday .morning at a local'private hospital of Mrs. Bayly, relict of the late Mr. Jas. Bayly, of Waitara* The deceased lady had been in indifferent health for a considerable time, but ortly <fiiiie'/recently'did-.any serious symptoms manifest' themselves. When it was seen that an operation was necessary, on Wednesday, she was brought into New Plymouth, but the relief sought for was unattainable. Mrs. Bayly was the eldest daughter of the late Rev. John Crossley, of Belfast, fjnd arrived in the colony thirty-six years ago. Deceased leaves two sons and two daughters.—Mail.-
