Owing to no explanation being given for the dismissal of Kiely, chief officer of the Canadian Pacific Company's steamer Mount Royal, the National Union of Masters and Mates demands his reinstatement, besides the increase of officers' pay; otherwise they will prevent . vessels sailing to-morrow. Quinn, Acting-Commissioner of Trade for New South Wales, who is investigating conditions throughout California, urged that tluu Pacific Coast should establish textile manufacturios, as Australian wool could be shipped to San Francisco cheaply, thus building as great an industry as now exists in England. Mr. Quinn also suggested that the importation of Australian meat would greatly reduce the cost of living in California.
