EGMONT BY-ELECTION.
RUMORED RETIREMENT. The I-lawera Star says that there is a rumor to the effect that Mr. C. A. Wilkinson may retire from the contest for the Egmont by-election. As yet no formal announcement has been made, but it is understood that, to avert a division in votes, at least not more than one candidate will stand on t>he Government side, to which Mr. Dive and Mr. Wilkinson belong. A meeting of the Government party was held last night to consider the position.
