TARANAKI v. WAIRARAPA. INTERESTING GAME ANTICIPATED.! The first representative Rugby football match to be played at New Plymouth this season will take place on the Recreation Sports Ground to-morrow afternoon between Taranaki and Wairarapa. An interesting exhibition is looked forward to, Wairarapa being credited with having a strong team. That Taranaki will by no means have a soft proposition is evidenced by the fact that last Thursday the Wairarapa men ran over Nelson to the tune of 48 points to 5. The brilliant passing of the Wairarapa backs was a feature of the match, and if they can repeat their performance to-morrow some good spectacuar play should be witnessed. The match will also afford local followers of the game a good opportunity of summing up the merits of the Taranaki fifteen which is to do battle against Wellington to-morrow week. The Taranaki team arrived by the Rarawa yesterday morning, and six of their number—Taylor, Jack and James Kissick, S. Cameron, Franklin, and Burke—are staying in town until after the match.
Tie Wairarapa men arrived by the mail train last night, and are quartered at the Imperial Hotel. They will be represented by the following:—Fullback. Tate; three-quarters, F. Groube, C. Groube, and W. Darville; five-eighths, Matson and Ross; half, O'Brien; wing forward, Henderson; forwards, Johnson, Goder, C. Ross, McKenzie, Hodge, R. Speckm.in,, A. Desmond. The team is in charge of Mr. C. Reid, as manager, and is aslo accompanied by the chairman of the Wairarapa Union, Mr. Booth. The visitors will practise on the Recreation Grounds this morning. A few changes are announced in the personnel of the home team. Stewart (Stratford) will play at full-back, Burke will replace Dewar (who is unable to play) in the front row, while Franklin will go to five-eighths in place of S. Cameron. James Kissick will be included in the forwards. The team will comprise:—Full-back, Stewart; threequarters, D. Cameron, Roberts, Stohr; five-eighths, McLeod, Franklin; half, Brown; forwards, Taylor (wing), Jack Kissick, James Kissick, Young, Smith, Hawkins, Cain, Burke. Emergency: S. Cameron.
The New Plymouth High School team will leave this morning for Napier to compete for the Poison Shield. Matches will be played against Napier and Palmerston North High Schools. Owing to a number of the boys being laid up with mumps the fifteen is by no means the best that could have been picked under more favorable circumstances. In fact, the school had a hard job to,rake a team together. The team will comprise: S. Ewing, A. and L. Marfell, A. Little, L. Goss, H. Lepper, L. Hooker, L. Richards, I. Pott, B. Sinclair,. Bruce, N. Little, E. Colson, H. Hirst. C. Crone. Emergencies: M. Hempton and T. Sykes.
