; PERSONAL. By tlm doath of Mr. Patrick O'Reilly, at Ills home on the Skinner road on Monday, Stratford loses one of its very early and very well respected settlers. A native of Cork, Ireland. Mr. O'Reilly came here from the West Coast in 1ST!). and in the following yea* took up land on'the .Skinner road, where he .has resided ever since. For the past 18 years he has been more or less ailing, and for'a couple of'years before his death the old gentleman was bed-ridden, but he "bore his suffering almost heroically. Hnj'l eaves a widow and one son to mourn theiir loss, and tfticy have the warm sympathy of a wide circle of acquaintances. The late Mr. O'Reilly was one of those men who lived up to the old saying, "IP you can't say good of a man, don't speak evil of him."
Mr. Tastier, secretary of the Stratford Dairy Factory, has returned from thi- south, accompanied by Mr:.. Fastier.
Dr. 0.. Evans, a Stratford District High School "old boy," leaves this morning for Hunterville, where he has decided to practice his profession.
STRAY PARAGRAPHS. Anyone .who published tlhe exact numbers of the "Commercials" who have visited Stratford recently would be questioned as to his descent from Ananias. One of them remarked yesterday, "It's wonderful where they find orders for all of us."
A fast-running machine of the latest pattern, new type and appliances, and capital stock of paper, cards, etc.. are at your disposal at the Stratford office of the News: Send your orders in right no*, and see how good our printing is. You are sure to be satisfied.
The Makahu Dairy Company is makinpr overtures to the StratfoTd Farmers' Co-operative Association to have ita rri-aiu manufactured at the Stratford factory. Every local enterprise makes for tV good of Stratford. The picture venture of Mine. Bernard is accused by some of "catching all the loose change." The Stratford people certainty patronise their permanent picture show very well, and get their money's worth—probably more. The money taken at the door of a local picture show is spent locally., And the fitting "p of "His Majesty's" as an up-to-date picture hall meant the spending here of a loi of foreign capital." It brought erui in to the town, and, by stalling off travelling picture shows, has kept lnuch of our needed silver in the place which would probably have been scooped up by itinerant showmen and .spent elsewhere. Is there any wonder, then, that the people stick to His Majesty's, which is reckoned to be. one of the finest picture halls in the Dominion? There's a great programme running just now, particulars of which appear in an advertisement elsewhere. These fine -films will be shown to-night for the last time in Stratford.
There was a big attendance at the Foresters' Hall on Monday night at the "long night" dance under the auspices of the Foresters, about 40 couples being present. The floor was in first-class order and music .was supplied by She Ngaere Orchestra (Messrs Walsh'piano, S. Parker cornet, and Walsh violin). Extras were played by Miss Copestake and Mr. R. Sanders, aiid the duties of M.O. were carried out. by Mr. E. Hancock. The hands of the" clock had travelled far into the morning before the happy folks cried "enough"
The following football team has been selected to represent the Fire Brigade in a match against the Foresters' Lodge on Thursday next: Full-back, E. Drake; three-quarters, C'rossan, Whittington, Duvey: five-eighths. B. Fearon; half, T. Wilson; wings. B. Burgess and Gorton; forwards. Milner, Walsh, Sullivan. Davis. Payton, Boon, and 11. FeaTon; emergency, Bennett. Sergt.-Major Dallinger leaves for Wellington on September 1, to make preliminary arrangements for Ihe school of instruction in camp rooking. Before coming to New Zealand. Recently he wrote a book, adapted to some extent from the Home War Office text-book, on a scheme of cooking to be u.ied in New Zealand- military training camps. is just n possibility that the volume will he issued by the Defence Department, instead of' by the author.
