The market was easy, i owing chiefly to the arrival of a large [consignment of New Zealand potatoes. Recently there have been complaints about the quality of the New Zealand tubers, but owing to more capable supervision in New Zealand this has almost entirely been remedied. LONDON MARKETS. London, August 18. Wheat.—An Australian cargo sold «t 39s 3d. Iron bars, 170s; angle steel, 140s. Wire netting, 50 per cent, and 2y t to 5 per cent, off list. Cement, £5 8b amd £5 «s. Hides.—At the sales there was a smaller supply of basils; first Wellingtons £l6 15s. Rabbits.—Firm and unchanged. New Zealand Meat. —Sheep: Canterbury, light and medium unchanged, heavy 4d; Southland 4'/ s d; North Island 4 l-10d, b>:-a brands 4y s d; ewes, 3%d; lambs, Canterbury in sight 5%d, others unchanged; !oef, forequartere 3%d, hindquarters 3%d. Australian Meat.—Sheep (and lambs unchanged; beef, forequarters 3y B d, hindquarters 3%d.
South American Meat.—Sheep, light unchanged, heavy 3%d; ewes, none offered; lambs unchanged; beef, frozen unchanged, chilled forequarters unchanged, hindquarters ,sMid.
lIIGII COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. By Telegraph—Preai As*o«iatiom. Wellington, Monday. The following is the High Commissioner's cablegram under date London, August 17 (Note: Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot):—
Mutton.—The market remains firm, and good demand continues. Canterbury 4%d, North Island 4%d (light weight), North Island 3%<l (heavy). Ewes are selling freely at 3%d. Lamb.—The market is rather quiet, the weather lately having been, unfavorable to the sale of lamb. The position is quite satisfactory. The total rupplies are 781,000 carcases short of last year's figures. Canterbury 5%d, other than Canterbury 5%d. Beef. —The market is quiet but steady. New Zealand hindquarters 3%d, forequarters 3%d. Butter.—The market is quiet, and small business is doing. The demand is chiefly for choicest quality. Danish 1295, Australian 112s, Siberian 107s.
Cheese.—The market is quiet but firm. New Zealand finest white and colored is selling at 65s to fids. Hemp.—The market is firm and a good demand continues. There is a small supply, and transactions are light. Spot New Zealand good fair £26 15s to £27, fair £25, fair current Manila £26 10s to £27 for any .positions. Stock, 868 tons. The output from Manila for the week was 20,000 bales. Wool. —The market is firm; 36's (low crossbreds) 'ls lVsd, 40's Is 2d, 44's (medium crossbreds) Is 2%d, 50's (halfbreds) Is oG's (quarter-breds) Is 8 3 / id. CO's (merinos) 2s 2d. Wheat.—The market is quiet. New Zealand long-berried, ex granary, per quarter of 4961b., 425; short-berried, 40s. Oats.—The market is quiet but steady. New Zealand short sparrowbills, per quarter of 3841b., 245. Peas.—The market is dull, and very little business is doing. New Zealand peas (partridge), per 5041b., 30s (new crop). Beans.—The market is very quiet. New Zealand beans f.a.q. (old crop), per 5041b.. 3fis.
Cocksfoot Seed—The market remains very flat.
