THE VETO OVER RIDDEN. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. New York, August 14. The House of Representatives, bv to SO. favored over-riding President 'faffs veto on Senator La Kollette's Y\ 00l Bill. The Speaker ruled that the veto was over-ridden, inasmuch as there was a two-thirds majority of those actually voting; hitherto a "two-thirds majority of the whole House has been coiwidered necessary. THE STEEL BILL VETOED. Washington. August 14. Mr. Taft has vetoed the Steel Bill, on the ground that the measure did not afford protection to American industries, and was intended for revenue purposes only. The president condemned the Ways and Means Committee. because it refused public hearings before passing the Bill. ° Tin- VETO OVERRULED. THE STEEL TARIEF BILL PASSED. Received 15. 11.30 p.m. Washington, August 15. The Senate passed the Army Appropriation Bill, replacing the Bill* vetoed by President Taft. The new Bill omits the provision for dismissing General Wood as Chief of Staff, which caused the President to veto the previous measure, and in consequence the Army was left -without funds.
The Senate passed the Cotton Bill, a Democratic measure, with an amendment repealing Canadian reciprocity except a3 regards pulp and paper.
The House of Representatives adopted the Steel Tariff Bill over the Presidential veto by 173 to 83.
