The Wanganui, Borough Council last night appointed Mr. C. N. Staveley, of t'hristehureh, to the position of borough engineer.

-Ur. J. 0. ITarknoss, secretary of the National Dairy Association, who has been on a visit to Vancouver, is expected' back at Auckland by the Marama on August 20. .Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, who landed in Wellington yesterday morning, was unable to catch the mail train from that city, and will, therefore, not reach Eltliam until this evening. Bishop Crossley is about to .spend a fortnight in Taranaki. His itinerary is as follows:—Saturday, August 17, arrive at Stratford; Sunday, August IS, Stratford and Jnglewood; Monday, August 19, Purangi, 2 o'clock, Inglewood, 8 o'clock; Tuesday, August 20, en route to Okau; Wednesday, August 21., Okau, 2 o'clock; Thursday, August 22, Waitara, 2.30 and 7,30 p.m.; Friday, August 23, Lepperton, 7 p.m.; Saturday, August 24, New Plymouth; Sunday, August 25, Henui 11 a.m., St. Mary's 2.30 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Monday, August 26, New Plymouth; Tuesday, August 27, Okato 1.45 p.m., Warea 7.30 p.m.; Wednesday, August 2S, Okato; Thursday, August 20, New Plymouth; Friday, August 30, return to Auckland.

The death occurred on Tuesday night of one of Wellington's earliest settlers, George Bolton, aged seventy-eight years. He was born at Cheltenham, (iiouees'tershire. and came out to Xew Zealand with his parents in the ship Clifton, which arrived at Wellington in 1841, Mr. Bolton being then seven years old. He spent a few years on the Victorian and Otago goldfields, but had resided for the greater portion of his life in Wellington. The deceased, who was connected with the building trade, was in his younger days a member of the Zingari Cricket Club, and played in representative matches. His wife predeceased him by two years. The only surviving member of the family is Mr. F. (!. Bolton, solicitor.
