RECORD OF THE INDUSTRIAL CENSUS. Tiie statistics of the meat freezing and preserving industry have just been compiled as part of the industrial census. They show just the same remarkable progress in the way of wages paid and value of produce as was demonstrated when the total figures for the dairy industry were ascertained. Ten years ago the meat industry gave employment to •2233 men; the total now is 4071. Wages have risen proportionally, and the value of output at an even greater ratio,- byproducts having attained an important position. The industry dealt with materials valued at £0,(529,000 in the year ended March 31, 1011. and the wages paid amounted to £4o8 r 48!), Activities were thus distributed over tho Dominion:— TTands Wages Province. In 1900: Hands, 2233; wages paid, £204,210. Regarding the timber industry, the census shows that 534 timber mills were operating in New Zealand, employing OH7I hands, as compared with 0008 live years ago. and paving £774.043 in wages, compared with £834,371. Aueklaud province, with an output of £027.057. stands easily 'it. the head of the industry. Wellington coming next with £274.007. and Westland following with £153.373. Though the employees are loss numerous to-day. the value of the output bus increased. being 1 £2,0011,888, compared with j £2,128,7M{ live years ago.
