TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") At the Queensland T.C..winter meeting yesterday the Metropolitan Handicap was won by My Gavonni, Lottie being second, and Black Prince third. There < were nineteen starters, and My Gavonni won by two lengths. Time, 2min 3Gsec. The fall sustained by Te Roti on Friday must have been much more serious than was at the time supposed (says the Lyttelton Times). On Sunday he refused all food, and became very violent; in fact, to all intents the animal became quite uncontrollable, jumping high into the air and throwing himself violently to the ground alternately. Mr. J. R. Charlton, M.R.C.Y.S., was then called in, and under his treatment Te Roti made steady progress, and although his condition was sufficiently critical to render an all-night watch necessary on Monday, all the more urgent symptoms had disappeared, and Tuesday found him practicailly himself again. The New Zealand Grand National meeting will be continued to-day, the chief event being the Grand Nat'onal Hurdle Race, run over two miles. When the final payments fell due on Friday light the field was reduced by the withdrawal of John, Master Theory, Te Roti, Bandalero and Mercedo, and it now numbers twenty-one. Tuesday's running should have the effect of causing The Rover and Uranium to harden, and Coronetted, Waipureka, Waikaraka and others to lengthen in the betting. The Rover is apparently in good fettle, and with only 21b more to carry to-day than he ran second with last year his chances look fair. Continuance is bound to be better suited by the shorter distance today. He won the race easily last year under 11.11, and even 12.7 may not tsiop him. Black Northern may not get the distance with hia load, and Paisano is hardly the horse he was when he carried 12.1 to victory in 1910. Koran bu done everything asked of iiim, and with a fair run will probably keep most of them busy. Waverley sports were never more confident. The Native is one of the most discussed horses in {lie race. He ran third with 10.5 last year, and Cnen won over two miles at Feilding. He is sure to be near the front in the earlier stages of the race, but may find ths traal quarter troublesome. Darby Paul is one of the best stayers in the field, and is a worthy Taranaki rep. Bully has a Great Northern Hurdle Race to his credit, and may run well. Of the other lightweights Coronetted and Sandy Paul have a fair crowd of supporters. Probably the littest horses saddled up today will be Koran, The Rover and Continuance.
Tuesday was a disastrous day for most punters, tlio successes of Beacon and Magdala being particularly unpleasant. Captain Jingle's victory was well received, and t! k ! dividend attached thereto was a particularly good one. Paritut.il, with his usual bad luck, got into second berth and save<T"Kis Dickers' money. As anticipated, Continuance couldnot stay the distance, and Hantcre did not jump well enough to have a chance. Armagh ran a fair race, as did T-Tawick. /ante may do..better over a shorter course. After all. there was only one horse in it—Captain Jingle. He won easily, and bis victory was well deserved.
