PROPOSED MODIFICATION. By Cable —Press Association—Copyright. Washington, August 13. Opponents of the proposal favoring the United States are confident that they will secure a modification of the Bill. The Britisli Government has made no further protest, but awaits final action by President Taft. The Canadian Government intends to join in the Britisli protest when made.
AUSTRALIA'S ATTITUDE. Melbourne, August 14. The question was of the most vital interest to Australia.
Mr. Fisher replied that he had observed the decision with regret. It was clearly against the treaty between Britain and America, and involved Australian interests. He did not think that the present was the time to discuss the matter. He had already expressed the views of the Commonwealth to the Mother Country.
