BOROUGH COUNCIL.

VARIOUS WORKS. The following monthly reports will be presented at to-night's meeting of the Borough Council. ELECTRIC LIGHT DEPARTMENT.

The electrical engineer (Mr. H. Black) reports:— Extensions forebay: During t.be past month we have received some more of the ironwork and the ibalance is just being landed at New Plymouth and should be on the site in a day or two. Concrete work is being pushed forward., the floor and nearly one-half of the walls having l>een put in. Pipe line: The contractors for this work have completed the laying of their pipes from the powerhouse to the top of tlie hill. This includes pipes to connect to the machines and the whole of the 48in. main. They are now getting the GOin. sections livetted and laid in trench.

I Power-house: The alterations to the building are well forward and should soon be completed. The crane has been put together and is now available for handling the machinery which has to be erected. The number'of men employed has ranged from 20_ to 24. Nearly Wo weeks were lost owing to wet weather. Connections: Consumers connected to date number 975. Now that the days are getting longer we are able to do without the assistance of the temporary plant, except on Saturday evenings, when it is required from three to three and a-half hours. All applications for lighting are being connected as .soon 1 as ready and applications for heating have been connected where guarantees have been giv*n not to use current during hours of peak load, which from the beginning of this month means Saturday evenings. The following is the expenditure in connection with the extensions to July 31: —Tail race, £1269 5s lid; forebay, £695 Is 3d; pipe line, £9BB 9s 2d; foundations, £365 10s 2d; building, £416 6s 7d; machinery, £2917 4s 7d; sundries, £7O 2s Id; crane, £175 Is 8d; total, £6897 7s sd. WORKS COMMITTEE.

This committee recommends that t!he letter from Mr. A. M. MaeDiarmid with reference to the condition of the footpath at the western end of Powderh&m Btreet be referred' to the borough em gineer to deal with; that the letters from Messrs. T. R. Clow and others for a temporary patth in Carrington road be referred to the horougih engineer to submit to the council meeting an < stitnate of the cost; that consideration of the letter from the Marine Department re the foreshore below Woolcomlx: Terrace be deferred; that the letter from Messrs. Wray and Brown with reference to Dartmoor roads be referred to the borough solicitors for their opinion; that the pound-keeper be instructed to visit Frankleigh Park as requested by the Frankleigh Park Settlers' Association; tflrat the letter from the Taranaki (N.Z.) Oil Wells, Ltd., applying for water supply be referred to his Worship thei Mayor, Crs. Clarke, Kibby, and Ambury to report on Monday; that the letter from Mr. F. E. Wilson with reference to N.R. 14 Pukenui be referred to his Worship the Mayor to report if the street formerly through the reserve !hcus ever been closed; that the application of the East End Bathing Committee for a' refund of £5 10s fid now held by the council in trust for the committee beac-': ceded to; that as requested by the committee the borough engineer be authorised to supervise the work proposed to b« carried out at the East End Bathing Reserve; that unless contracts are let for the work, plans submitted and fees paid before tihe expiration of fourteen days the borough inspector be instructed to take proceedings against those mentioned in his report of the Bth inst., an not having complied with the notice to connect with the sewers; that the application of Mr. ,T. W. Hayden and others for extension of sewers be referred to the borough engineer to report upon: that the following adjustment of loansarranged between the town clerk and county clerk be confirmed:— i ! The committee also recommends that the council secede from the Taranaki Employers' Association; that the' borough engineer be authorised to lay the Bewer in Gilbert street from Gover street to Ridge lane; that- the borough engineer define the duties of the two surfacemen for the Ilurworth road, and that lie be authorised to p,iv them £2 14s per week wet and dry. the "wage to include house allowance; that t'lie .horseman in charge of the stable be paid £2 12s per week and the use of cottage free; that the. borough engineer be authorised to kerb and form the footpaths on the -soutlv .sides of St. Aubvn street and Hine street from Morley street to Outfield road at an estimated cost of £59 10s; that the recommendation of the borough engineer to break up and re-spread ilhe metal in Devon street central be given effect to; that the borough engineer be authorised to lay a 4in. coat of metal in Devon street from llobson street to Liardet street' at an estimated cost of £300; that his Worship the Mayor interview tlie chairman of the St. Aubyn Board and endeavor to arrange that when the board is effecting its new work near Morshead's on the South road the road be straightened. EI.ECTRIC LTGHT COMMITTEE. This committee recommends:—That steps be taken to raise the £12,00!) loan already authorised for electric light extensions, the loan to bear interest at. 4Vi per cent, with % jtcv cent sinking furnl additional: that the action of the chairman in authorising the purchase of j four miles of insulated wire at £23 per mile be confirmed. RESERVES COMMITTEE. This committee recommends:—That tenders be invited for lease of section [2330 for twenty-one years with perpetual rights of renewal at an upset rental of £1 per annum subject to the conditions J of lea.se submitted by the borough solicitor and approved by the committee; that sections 1, 2. 3. 4. 5. (i, 8, and 13. Avenue road reserve, be again submitted to auction at the upsets previously fixed, a deposit of £5 to be first received Ids cover cost of advertising, such deposit to be returned upon a lease of any one of the sections being sold at the auction. BATHS COMMITTEE. This committee recommends:—That the borough engineer be authorised to give effect to a few minor repairs at. the baths as recommended by him; that
