Details of the Kochan massacre show that the town was full on market day. The first explosion in the bazaar killed eleven, and the second, five minutes later, caused an indescribable panic. Bands of Mussulmans, armed with guns, revolvers and clubs, butchered the Bulgarians wholesale for three hours, under the «yes of the authorities. When the troops appeared, instead of arresting the murderers, they searched for Bulgarians till nightfall.
It is estimated that 140 were killed and the number wounded is unknown.
Next morning a hundred bodies were laid out in the courtyard of the Bulgarian church.
No arrests were made, except those of innocent Christians.
