• Mr. F. J. Harrop has- succeeded Mr. John Cook as land transfer draughtsman in the District Lands and Surrey office in New Plymouth. Miss McArthur is resigning the position of headmistress of the Oaonui School. General regret is felt in thai district at her resignation. Mr. John Lemmone announces that Madame Melba is to tour with Eugen* Ysaye, the famous violinist, and Herr Wilhelm Beckhaus, the distinguished German pianist, on liqr return to England next month. Word was received by cable a few days ago that Captain Seddon, who is now at Aldershot, had been compelled to undergo a surgical operation for appendicitis. On Friday Mrs. Seddon was informed by cable that her son was lnaking & good recovery. The Hon. T, Mackenzie arrived in Eltham on Saturday evening. Yesterday he was the guest of Mr. Felix McGuirt at Okaiawa. To-day he will visit Manaia and Opunake, and this evening he will attend a farewell social at the Town Hall. On the evening of the 21st inst. Mr. Mackenzie will entertain members of Parliament, and on the following day leave for London. The death occurred at Wellington on Friday last of Mr. Alexander James McTavish, formerly of the firm of McTavish, Tatum and Co., land and estate agents, and a well-known resident. The deceased, who was 70 years of age, -was born in Inverness, Scotland, and wa* educated there and at the famous Bluecoat School, London, and subsequently at the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

At a meeting of the Tauranga Boa'ougih Council last week it was unanimously decided that Mr. Climie, civil engineer, of Hawera, be communicated with and asked on what terms tie will, prepare a comprehensive report on improvements in the borough of Tauranga. In moving this, Mr. Robbins referred at length to the many public works whichMr. Climie had carried to a successful issue in various districts in Taranaki and other parts of the North Island:. A pleasing little function, reports tht Wanganui Herald, took place last Tuesday evening, when the principals and staff of the firm of H. Collier and Co. met together, the occasion being a, presentation to Mr. H. C. Collier, son of Mr. Herbert Collier, on the eve of liis approaching marriage. The prospective bridegroom's health was toasted in a fitting manner, and he received the good wishes of all. The present consisted of a massive marble clock from the principals and a handsome beaten copper inkstand froh the staff. Mr .Collier was married in Wellington on Thursday, and left afterwards for a trip to Syd»ey. Arrangements are being made to tender the Prime Minister (the Hon. W. F. Massey) an official reception when hj« carries out his stated intention of visiting Auckland next month. The chairmn* of the Auckland branch of the Reform League states that a large gathering in the Town Hall will probably be organised, with the object of presenting u, largely-signed illuminated address to Mr. Massey. It is probable that the newAuckland post office will be opened by the Postmaster-General (the Hon. T*. H. Rhodes) on the occasion of the Prime* Minister's visit. In which case "both Ministers will doubtless travel north together.
